25 October 2023 - 27 November 2023
The Board of Directors of the Cultural Foundation of ESIEA presented the first visual arts exhibition in the space of the ESIEA Library “Dimitris I. Pournaras.”
On the occasion of the anniversary of October 28, 1940, the Reading Room and the Press Museum hosts from October 25 to November 27, the solo exhibition of Christina Calbari, Absence Report.
The exhibition consists of paintings and drawings on paper, created especially for the Library, inspired by photographs and film documents from the Occupation and the Holocaust. These visual compositions, which arose from the artist’s free interpretation of archival material, aim to approach the subject and the tragic sense of loss, primarily through a symbolic and existential perspective.
This new series of paintings engages in a dialogue with the works of the earlier collection The Excursion, which portrays the serenity of a one-day trip into nature, overshadowed by the subtle threat of World War II. The works— inspired by the novella by Anna Seghers, The Excursion of the Lost Girls— were first presented in a solo exhibition of the same title at the City of Athens Art Center in spring 2023, (curated by Christoforos Marinos).
The exhibition was inaugurated by the Minister of Culture, Dr. Lina Mendoni.
The exhibition catalogue is introduced by Vassilis Vassilikos, Vice-President of the ESIEA Cultural Foundation, and Victor Isaac Eliezer, General Secretary of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece.
The exhibition was realized with the kind sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the General Secretariat for Communication and Information, and the Athens–Macedonian News Agency.
